Description

Issued in 1970, this stamp commemorates the 300th anniversary of the first permanent settlement in South Carolina. In 1566, Spanish explorers established the first settlement in what is now South Carolina. However, this settlement lasted only 20 years. It was not until 1670 that English settlers established the first permanent settlement at Charles Town (Charleston).
