Description

Issued in 1977, this stamp commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first solo transatlantic flight. On May 20, 1927, without a radio, and armed only with a compass and a map, Charles A. Lindbergh took off near New York City in his plane "Spirit of St. Louis." Thirty-three hours later he landed in Paris, thus completing the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
